The serrated peaks of Montserrat rise 1,236 meters above the Llobregat River, their conglomerate columns visible from Barcelona on clear days. Benedictine monks established the abbey in 1025, building around a cave where shepherds claimed to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary.
The monastery grew into a pilgrimage destination housing La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, a Romanesque carving venerated since the twelfth century. Over nine centuries, the complex expanded to include a basilica, a boys' choir school founded in the thirteenth century, and a library holding manuscripts predating the Gutenberg Bible.
Today the site receives over two million visitors annually, drawn by the religious heritage and the dramatic geology that inspired Gaudí and Dalí. The abbey remains an active monastery, its 80 resident monks maintaining liturgical hours while the basilica opens to the public daily from 07:00 to 20:00. An 8-euro conservation fee supports preservation work on the basilica's facade mosaics and the renaissance cloister. The mountain's trail network extends across 16 kilometers, threading between rock formations named for their resemblance to human figures and animals.
Horse riding Barcelona Montserrat excursions depart from stables near the lower cable-car station, following dirt paths through oak and pine forest before ascending to open ridgelines. Trails reach altitudes where the Mediterranean coastline and Pyrenean foothills both enter view. Most guided routes last two to three hours, pausing at viewpoints before descending past hermitages carved into cliff faces. The mountain's microclimate produces sudden fog banks even in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms build rapidly between June and September.
